Prints
Prints are drawn directly on site, usually in museums, onto wood sized to be large enough to fit in my backpack. I feel free to change what I see and work different galleries into a single print, thus combining cultures and altering time. Many are made in the British Museum, an absolute favorite home.
Sketchbooks
Sketchbooks, filled with visual and verbal notes help me see detail, proportion, movement, keep my observational skills sharp, and connect directly with all my senses. My sketchbook is a “thinking hand” and records travels, factual information, restaurants, studies for prints, and the natural world.
I have been visiting artists at several universities and asked to share my sketchbooks to help students see the value of drawing and of keeping a sketchbook/journal. Notes about lighting or sound can influence carving and even the most arbitrary of situations can present an opportunity to draw.
